Appropriate technologies for the treatment of scheduled wastes

The treatment technologies included in the first review were nominated in the study brief by Environment Australia to include, but not be limited to:
These technologies were those currently available or actively represented in Australia at the time of the first review. As part of the subsequent (second and third) reviews, additional submissions were sought resulting in inclusion of the following technologies:
In this report, the treatment technologies previously considered have been further reviewed, and updated information included where available.
In preparation for this review, additional submissions were sought from organisations included on the Scheduled Waste Management Group mailing list for treating scheduled wastes.

As previously indicated, it should not be considered that the above listing is a comprehensive review of all applicable treatment technologies. CMPS&F notes that high temperature incineration technologies have not been included in this review based on advice from Environment Australia and are not considered to be an option for the treatment of scheduled wastes in Australia at this time. While high temperature incineration is a proven technology, it has been found to be difficult to implement in Australia due to public concern.
This review does not seek to compare technologies with the aim of identifying the technology best able to treat certain wastes. Instead, the review identifies those technologies that are able or potentially able to destroy the contaminants identified in Section 2.1. Technologies identified as being able to treat certain contaminants have been evaluated with respect to:
In practice, waste mixtures are highly complex and therefore this review must be considered to be a general guide rather than a detailed statement on the applicability of a particular technology to a range of specific wastes.
Where a detailed evaluation is required, such as in the licensing of scheduled waste treatment technologies for commercial operation, reference should be made to the National Protocol "Approval/Licensing of Commercial-Scale Facilities for the Treatment/Disposal of Schedule X Wastes", endorsed by ANZECC in 1993 and issued by the ANZECC Waste Management Secretariat in July 1994.
