The Australian Government has granted funding to the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES) in Melbourne, for their CERES Zero Emissions by 2012 project.
The project aims to demonstrate new water conservation and renewable energy features in a community environment park in metropolitan Melbourne, Victoria. The Centre wants to engage people to transform their lives to be part of the movement towards a zero emissions future.
Key initiatives of the CERES Zero Emissions by 2012 project include:
- new water conservation features for six of the Centres most visited buildings including rainwater harvesting, grey and black water on-site treatment and reuse in the gardens
- installing a 15 kilowatt wind turbine, photovoltaic solar panels, a solar thermal energy generator, an electricvehicle charging station and biogas barbeques
- new buildings planned in the project will feature best practice in energy conservation measures, such as using double glazing and insulation
- new sustainable technology options including aquaponics, solar cooking, solar refrigeration, roof gardens, vertical gardens and electric vehicle conversion.
As a long standing sustainability education facility, CERES has established networks within the residential, business and research communities, providing a broad and diverse audience reach. More than 450,000 people visit the Centre each year, including 65,000 tertiary and school students.
The Centres hands-on demonstrations of commercially available energy and water saving technologies aim to inspire a significant uptake of energy and water efficiency measures by visitors to the site and provide value to all educators.
The demonstration of such a large range of existing and cutting-edge technologies will make a visit to CERES a fascinating and motivating experience for anyone.
