Recipient: Clean Energy for Eternity, New South Wales
Funding: $100,000 for a feasibility study plus the consideration of an additional $1 Million if the project is to go ahead
The Australian Government has granted funding to the Clean Energy for Eternity community group as part of the Green Precincts Fund Program, to conduct a feasibility study on a solar farm in the Bega region of NSW.
Clean Energy for Eternity's aim is to give local communities a practical working example of how to get a 1-2MW solar farm off the ground. The solar farm could provide enough energy to power 1000 homes, presenting a working example of green energy working for a regional community.
The community group has set a target of a 50 per cent reduction in energy use and 50 per cent renewable energy by 2020 (50/50 by 2020), if the solar farm is to go ahead this will contribute to achieving this target in the local community.
The feasibility study, conducted in consultation with the local community and experts, will make recommendations on the type, cost, size and technologies to pursue for the solar farm. The outcomes of the feasibility study will also determine what funding and technical partnerships are required for this type of facility. The final report is expected to be complete by April 2009.
The Green Precincts Fund was announced in the 2008-09 Federal Budget, with funding of $15 million over four years to support at least ten high-profile demonstration projects that deliver water and energy savings while educating the community about water and energy efficiency.
The Green Precincts Fund is an Australian Government initiative to prepare Australia for a future with less water and to encourage local communities to better manage their water and energy use for current and future generations.
