This report describes the research programs carried out as part of Stages I and II of the ?Productivity and Water Flow Regulation in the Ord River of north-western Australia? project (the Ord EFI). The information from the Ord EFI program (and other studies) will be used by the Water and Rivers Commission to assess the ecological changes that have occurred in the lower Ord River since regulation of flows in the 1960s and 70s.
Stage 1 of the Ord EFI was about compiling data and information and initiating studies so changes in the flow regime of the river and its ecology could be assessed. During Stage II of the Ord EFI field sampling was completed, all data compiled and analysed. Stage III of the Ord EFI, which is not covered here, will be the completion of the project and the assessment of the flow dependant aspects of the river?s ecology.
Part A of this Report is a summary of the project, and describes the approach adopted for the Ord EFI and the major results that support the development of EWRs and reviews the Ord EFI program with reference to its appropriateness, effectiveness, and transferability of its methods and results to other river systems. Part A presents key aspects of the Ord EFI?s communication strategies and lists events that were organised to facilitate stakeholder involvement. Part B describes the methods used in the research programs in detail and presents results of the studies. Part B also discusses the significance of results to the lower Ord River and other similar river systems in Australia, implications for river management and the potential for adoption of the outputs.
