About the report

Australia has large natural diversity among aquatic ecosystems, reflecting the variation in the natural surroundings and conditions. This creates difficulties in the establishment and application of national water quality guidelines. Similarly, knowledge and understanding of the aquatic biota in water bodies across the content makes management at a national level difficult. Therefore, a classification of Australia into regions, based on landscape factors that are most likely to influence aquatic ecosystems, may offer a practical method of accommodating this natural diversity.

This report was submitted to Ministers of the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) for approval on 19 December 1997. ANZECC ministers noted and approved the report (ANZECC Resolution 288; 19 Dec 97). The report examines methods for aquatic ecoregion delineation to aid development of an appropriate protocol for establishing an aquatic ecoregion framework in Australia.
