What is non-urban water metering?
Non-urban water metering applies to meters (including measuring devices, systems and their component parts) owned by entitlement holders, water service providers and jurisdictional governments and used for trade and/or related resource management activities in a non-urban setting.
Why is it important to improve water metering in Australia?
With water becoming scarcer across Australia, it is vital that more accurate measurement is used to support management decisions and to assist more efficient water use.
Establishing new metering standards is fundamental to improving water information and water management. Accurate metering protects all water-users and is a key part of a secure water entitlement framework.
The introduction of nationally consistent non-urban water meter standards will enable water used in river and groundwater systems around Australia to be measured more accurately. More accurate measurement will assist water managers and users identify areas where efficiency can be improved, and minimise water lost through delivery systems.
Nationally consistent non-urban water meter standards are supported by the National Water Initiative, which was agreed through the Commonwealth and State and Territory Governments' shared commitment to water reform.
Who is undertaking this work?
The Metering Expert Group was established in 2006. The Group comprises of representatives from state and territory water resource management agencies and water service providers, the Commonwealth Government, National Measurement Institute, Irrigation Australia, Standards Australia, the Murray-Darling Basin Commission, and other industry representatives with expertise in water metering.
How is the Metering Expert Group improving metering?
The Metering Expert Group is responsible for the co-ordination of the development of water meter specifications, and water meter installation standards, as outlined in the National Water Initiative.
The Metering Expert Group has initiated a series of projects that are essential for the successful implementation of national non-urban water meter standards. These projects are outlined in a separate fact sheet Metering Expert Group - Metering Projects.
