In May 2003, the Hon Warren Truss MP, former Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, issued a call to the Australian public, through the Water Savings Project, for ideas on how to save water in urban, rural and regional Australia. Many of the 555 submissions received featured ideas and devices for saving water. The ideas submitted generally related to:
- new infrastructure;
- renewal of old infrastructure;
- improving existing technologies;
- water recycling and reuse options;
- institutional changes; and
- new management systems and practices.
The $2billion Australian Government Water Fund is now the primary source of funding for water-related projects. As a result, the Water Savings Project has been closed. The Final Report of the Water Savings Project has now been published and is available in the following formats:
