Water Proofing the South - Stage 1
City of Onkaparinga, South Australia
Australian Government Funding: $34,500,000
Project description
Water Proofing the South Stage 1 was an integrated water resource management strategy based entirely in the City of Onkaparinga. It provides alternative water sources such as reclaimed water and stormwater to replace the use of traditional water sources such as mains water and groundwater so that overall water use in the region is more sustainable - economically, environmentally and socially.
Waterproofing the South Stage 1 has been carried out as a series of 7 integrated components
- Christies Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant quality upgrade
- Christie Creek Stormwater Upgrade
- Environmental Flows Study
- Southern Urban Reuse Project
- Willunga Basin Water Company distribution network expansion
- Willunga Effluent Reuse
- Willunga Balancing Storage and Trade Waste
Project benefits
The project has:
- decreased demand on potable and freshwater resources by 3.8GL/year through increased use of alternative sources such as wastewater and stormwater reuse
- improved ocean ecosystems including fragile seagrass communities and reefs located in Gulf St Vincent by reducing the volume of effluent and stormwater discharged to the Gulf.
Progress
Stage 1 of the project is now complete and the report is available below.
