On 6 May 2011 the Woodcroft Library and Neighbourhood Centre was officially opened by Mayor Lorraine Rosenberg and Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water, Senator the Hon. Don Farrell.
The Woodcroft Library and Neighbourhood Centre had been closed for redevelopment as part of the Woodcroft Green Precinct project.
The redevelopment transformed an ageing facility into a modern and highly sustainable green hub in just 10 months. The hub, located in southern Adelaide, South Australia, incorporates best practice design features and innovative technology to showcase the benefits of sustainable living.
The project has allowed the Centre to reduce its energy use by 65 per cent and save approximately 122 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Key initiatives
Key initiatives of the Woodcroft Green Precinct: Combined Library and Neighbourhood Centre Demonstration Site project included the installation of:
- 11.28 kW capacity photovoltaic panels
- a solar hot water system
- water submetering
- taps, cisterns and urinals with 6-star WELS rated fittings
- energy efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
- a building management system with room sensors that automatically switches off lights when not required
- a rainwater harvesting system.
Community engagement
As a busy community hub, the Woodcroft Library and Neighbourhood Centre has promoted sustainability measures to visitors, local residents, school students and local businesses by showing examples of good design choices.
Key community engagement activities that have been undertaken at the centre include:
- a green building trail that demonstrates key green building features and provides points of interest on the tours
- a 'Green Team' that is dedicated to engaging the public about the redevelopment of the centre and relating a sustainable living message
- green tours that provide regular building tours for a range of different audiences, including business contacts
- a real time display of energy production and water capture located in the foyer which also shows savings in mains water, electricity supply and greenhouse gas emissions.
