Windy Hill Oval
The project, now complete has demonstrated water and energy efficiency savings to the public through:
- installing irrigation at Windy Hill Oval
- upgrading the lighting throughout the precinct
- installing a building management system
- upgrading the air conditioning plant infrastructure and operations.
The project aims to halve potable water use on site after the installation of an 800 000 litre underground water storage system, rainwater tanks and irrigation. Bore water will be cleaned through an innovative mini-desalination plant.
Key initiatives
Key initiatives of the Windy Hill Green Precinct project included:
- reducing Windy Hill's potable water use by more than half
- raising community awareness about water and energy savings through onsite demonstration measures
- encouraging the community to install water and energy savings measures in the home and at community facilities
- demonstrating that non-potable water supplies can maintain the good condition of Windy Hill Precinct playing surfaces.
Community engagement
As a high profile AFL club, the Essendon Football Club has the opportunity to educate players, staff and fans about ways they can help the environment in day to day activities. The Windy Hill project site is a community facility used by local residents, schools and sporting groups and provides a wealth of opportunities to demonstrate water and renewable energy efficiency measures.
Guided tours of the Windy Hill precinct and the Essendon Hall of Fame Museum are conducted and 'green' trained staff visit local school communities to educate on the Green Precinct initiatives and intended results. The Essendon Hall of Fame Museum attracts an average of 4000 visits each year.
