Prime Minister's Water Wise Award
The Prime Minister's Water Wise Award, now in its third year, is Australia's premier award recognising water efficiency excellence by commercial and industrial sectors.
These sectors, on average, use around 15 to 20 per cent of urban water in Australia. Greater water efficiency in commercial and industrial operations takes pressure off fresh water supplies in urban and regional areas.
Macleay River Meats Pty Ltd, trading as Eversons Food Processors, was announced as the winner of the Award at a gala dinner in Melbourne on 26 October 2012.
Winner - Eversons Food Processors
Judges comments - A standout winner, Eversons Food Processors is a family owned business clearly trying to improve the environmental and sustainability outcomes of their processes, while involving and training staff. A range of measures to deliver significant water savings and sustainable outcomes has been implemented. The organisation saved 94.88% during the reporting period and has implemented impressive and long-term waste management strategies including recycling salt and the purchase of a blood dehydrator. Eversons Food Processors are a fine example within the meat production industry, where sustainability and environmental initiatives would not appear to be the primary focus.
Finalist - Camerons Nursery
Judges comments - Cameron's Nursery has demonstrated outstanding savings during the reporting period. With a well-executed submission, the Nursery has implemented a wide variety of effective water-saving strategies. The nursery has involved staff, customers and participated in third party partnerships to reach their sustainable goals. Being in an industry that is particularly vulnerable to drought, Cameron's nursery has become fully independent of mains water.
Finalist - Sakata Rice Snacks
Judges comments - Sakata Rice Snacks Australia has undertaken ground breaking initiatives to become water efficient. The organisation has overcome internal resistance to reducing wastewater and undertook research to find the most appropriate solution. Sakata achieved substantial reduction in water and energy use as well as trade waste disposal. The company saved an impressive 20 megalitres per year.
Highly Commended - Serco Australia
Judges comments - Serco Australia is to be commended for its commitment to overall sustainability. The combination of technology and behavioural change strategies is a fine example to other prisons and community buildings. Serco Australia has realised impressive water savings during the reporting period.
