Spatial Sciences and Data Integration
In 2009, a new group (Spatial Sciences & Data Integration) was formed to bring together the spatial and data integration expertise previously distributed across the ERISS’s programs.
The functions of the group are to:
- Develop leading edge products for assessment of land condition and cover (including freshwater wetland areas), with a primary focus on those aspects related to the operational impacts and rehabilitation of minesites in the tropics.
- Provide spatial sciences expertise for projects across the Division.
- Develop and implement the framework(s) for corporate storage and retrieval of spatial, water, soils, biology and photographic data.
The key tasks of the group include:
- Enhance and grow the capability of eriss to deliver high end spatial products.
- Populate and finalise the Bushtucker SIS and other spatially-based products.
- Development and implementation of a remote sensing framework for environmental monitoring in the Alligator Rivers Region, with a particular focus on mine site rehabilitation and the establishment of ecosystems.
- Integration and standardisation of disparate knowledge bases to a common spatially-based platform.
- Maintain systems and protcools for management of spatial and point source data.

Spatial Sciences & Data Integration have a spectral laboratory set up to collect laboratory spectra and to test calibration target material prior to undetaking sampling in the field for radiometric correction of satellite imagery.
The group currently has three (ASD Inc) field spectrometers: FieldSpec 3 Max (350-2500 nm); FieldSpecPro-FR (350-2500 nm); and FieldSpec HandHeld 2 (325-1075 nm).
