Heritage grants and funding

Protecting National Historic Sites

We anticipate that funding under the existing Protecting National Historic Sites programme will next be made available for the 2014-15 financial year.

Your Community Heritage

The Your Community Heritage programme which previously encompassed the Protecting National Historic Sites programme has now closed.

The major sources of Australian Government funding for activities that benefit Australia's heritage are:

  • Competitive programmes under which eligible parties can apply for their project to be considered as part of a formal funding round; and
  • Discretionary, ad hoc or non-competitive grants under which funds are approved by the Minister.

Current programmes

The National Trusts Partnership Programme provides on-going funding to the Australian Council of National Trusts to support activities that increase public awareness, understanding and appreciation of Australia's cultural heritage, and enhance and promote its conservation and assist the Trusts to advocate and work for the preservation and enhancement of Australia's cultural heritage.

Historic Shipwrecks Programme

The Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 aims to ensure that historic shipwrecks are protected for their heritage values and maintained for recreational, scientific and educational purposes. Activities are coordinated through the Historic Shipwrecks Programme which provides on-going funding to the Minister’s Historic Shipwrecks Delegates in each of the states, Northern Territory and Norfolk Island. Funding is also provided to the Australasian Institute for Maritime Archaeology, which is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation of underwater cultural heritage, and promotion of maritime archaeology.
