The objectives of the Fuel Quality Standards Act 2000 (the Act) are to:

  • regulate the quality of fuel supplied in Australia in order to:
    • reduce the level of pollutants and emissions arising from the use of fuel that may cause environmental and health problems; and
    • facilitate the adoption of better engine technology and emission control technology; and
    • allow the more effective operation of engines; and
  • ensure that, where appropriate, information about fuel is provided when the fuel is supplied.

Compliance with the Act

The department runs a fuel testing program to monitor the quality of fuels sold in Australia and ensure compliance with the Act and the Fuel Quality Standards Regulations 2001. Through this program, fuel samples are taken throughout the fuel supply chain, including at service station forecourts.

Make a fuel quality complaint

If you have purchased fuel and you believe it has adversely affected or damaged your vehicle, or if you have information regarding the adulteration of fuels that are subject to the Act, you can report it.

The department uses fuel quality complaints to inform its fuel testing program. Information provided is highly regarded and held in strict confidence. The Act restricts the department’s authority to disclose information to parties other than other government agencies that assist in the administration or enforcement of a taxation law or consumer protection law.
