Australian Antarctic Division

The Australian Antarctic Division Library, established in 1950, acts as the nation's primary source of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic information. The library supports the activities of Australia's Antarctic program including its scientific research, policy, management and support operations. It provides library and information services to Antarctic Division staff at its headquarters in Kingston, Tasmania and its Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations. Individuals conducting polar research are welcome by appointment.

The library is a repository for materials of national significance including the ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions) archive of station reports, voyage reports and ship log books, as well as rare and valuable polar materials, Antarctic Treaty information, ANARE Jubilee (1947-1997) oral history tapes and transcripts, and Antarctic historical artefacts.

The artefact collection is maintained and developed as a collection of national significance and items are displayed to publicise ANARE and the importance of Australia's role in the Antarctic.

Collections are located at Kingston head office and the four permanent stations: Macquarie Island, Casey, Davis and Mawson. A remote collection is located at the Glaciology Section at the Antarctic Co-operative Research Centre, University of Tasmania.

The library participates in collaborative resource sharing and consortia including FISHNET, AGLIN, ELN, ERA, IAMSLIC, Libraries Australia and the Tasmanian Library Network.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

The Library at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) provides a service of major international significance in the subject areas of natural resource management, especially marine park management.

The Library attempts to provide a proactive and effective information service that supports the overall goal and aims of the Authority, and that meets the information needs of all clients. While the collection's emphasis is the sustainable management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, other important subject areas are marine protected areas planning and management, environmental impact assessment, national park planning, coral reef ecology, environmental monitoring, environmental law and World Heritage.

The collection holds approximately 9000 monographs, 900 serial titles, and 200 videos, together with a very large cartographic collection of topographic maps, hydrographic charts, satellite images and aerial photography. Access is available to online databases such as DIALOG and INFORMIT online.

The Image Library at GBRMPA comprises a large collection of spectacular photography showing all aspects of life on the Great Barrier Reef. This collection includes over 70,000 colour and black and white images. This unique and comprehensive collection is available for external use as well as supporting the information needs of the Authority and its staff.

The REEF bibliographic database is jointly managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and RMIT Publishing. REEF indexes material on or about the Great Barrier Reef, and is available online via INFORMIT Online Information Service. REEF is Australia's largest single bibliographic information source on the Great Barrier Reef.

Loans of monographs and videos and document delivery services are possible through the standard procedures and conditions listed in the Australian Interlending Code.
