About the note

In tropical wetland environments such as the Alligator Rivers Region, water is a key pathway for the transport solutes and sediment. The Supervising Scientist Division (SSD) use a number of different methods to assess the water quality (solute and sediment levels) in creeks and billabongs surrounding the Ranger and Jabiluka Mine sites to ensure that there is no negative impact on the environment. These include monitoring changes in water chemistry, measuring contaminant levels in mussels to make sure they are safe for people to eat and assessing the health of macroinvertebrates, fish and snails living in the creeks and billabongs.
