Ranger mine monitoring data
Magela Creek monitoring data 2002-2010
The graphs on this web page show the following key chemical indicators for the 2007-10 and the 2002-07 wet seasons.
The Supervising Scientist's interpretation of the data in these charts is available at:
Uranium in Magela Creek
The uranium limit of 6 µg/L recommended by the Supervising Scientist has been derived using local ecotoxicological data in accordance with the Australian Water Quality Guidelines to protect 99% of the species present. The limit must not be exceeded. Please note that the limit is far above the range shown on the charts, but the scale on the right hand axis shows how the measured concentrations compare to the limit.

Manganese in Magela Creek
The manganese guideline recommended by the Supervising Scientist is determined statistically and may be exceeded occasionally due to natural events. The guideline should not be exceeded due to mining activities.

Magnesium in Magela Creek
There is no specific guideline for magnesium in Magela Creek. EC is strongly correlated to magnesium. Therefore, the guideline recommended by the Supervising Scientist for electrical conductivity is referred to when interpreting magnesium data.

Sulfate in Magela Creek
There is no specific guideline for sulfate in Magela Creek. EC is strongly correlated to sulfate. Therefore, the guideline recommended by the Supervising Scientist for electrical conductivity is referred to when interpreting sulfate data. For comparison, the drinking water standard with taste as the criterion for sulfate is 250 mg/l.
pH in Magela Creek
The pH guideline recommended by the Supervising Scientist is statistically determined. It may be exceeded occasionally due to natural events but should not be exceeded due to mining activities. pH will be interpreted with regard to the values of other key variables.

Conductivity in Magela Creek
The conductivity guideline recommended by the Supervising Scientist is determined statistically and may be exceeded occasionally due to natural events. The guideline should not be exceeded due to mining activities.

Turbidity in Magela Creek
The turbidity guideline of 26 NTU recommended by the Supervising Scientist is determined statistically and may be exceeded occasionally due to natural events. The guideline should not be exceeded due to mining activities.

Radium-226 in Magela Creek
The limit for total 226Ra activity concentration has been defined for human radiological protection purposes. The medians of all 226Ra data collected over the 2011-12 wet season are calculated for both the upstream and the downstream sites. The median of the upstream data is then subtracted from the median of the downstream data. This difference value, called the ‘wet season median difference’, should not exceed 10 mBq/L.
