Perth Solar City
The Perth Solar City is Australia's newest and final solar city. It was announced on 11 August 2008 and work is currently underway to prepare for the launch to the community, which will occur in late 2009.
The Perth Solar City project will focus on the six member councils of the Eastern Metropolitan Region Council (EMRC): Town of Bassendean, City of Bayswater, City of Belmont, Shire of Kalamunda, Shire of Mundaring and City of Swan.
The Perth Solar City consortium will be working with government, industry, business and the local community to trial sustainable energy solutions.
What is involved?
The Perth Solar City is trialling practical and creative ways to be smarter about our energy use including: support for solar photovoltaic and solar hot water systems for homes, trial of smart technologies, showcase and demonstration projects, audits and advice, pricing incentives and other demand management measures.
More information will be provided as part of the City's launch in late 2009.
Benefits
The Perth Solar City Consortium expects significant community, industry and environmental benefits over the life of the Perth Solar City program including a reduction in thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
The Solar City trial in Perth will provide valuable information and lessons to inform Australia's future energy and greenhouse policies.
Consortium leaders
The Perth Solar City consortium is joining the Australian Government in delivering this trial. The lead proponent, Western Power, is joined by the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council, Eco Smart, Prospero Productions, SolaHart, SunPower and Synergy.
The Perth Solar City is supported by the State Minister for Energy, the Hon Peter Collier, and the Office of Energy.
