Disability Action Plan 2012 - 2014

I am pleased to present the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities Disability Action Plan 2012–2014.
The overarching theme of the plan is to cultivate a culture that embraces and celebrates a diverse workforce and removes barriers that prevent participation. This document details our agenda over the next two years and focuses on practical objectives to help us achieve a disability confident organisation—one that is underpinned by a culture of respect, acceptance and understanding. In creating an inclusive organisation, the department will increase its capacity to employ and retain people with disability.
While the plan responds to requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, our approach is not limited to legislative compliance. Rather, we will include disability considerations as part of our core business.
Underpinning the plan are four key objectives:
- Increasing our capacity to employ and retain people with disability.
- Encouraging a culture of tolerance and respect in the workplace.
- People with disability fully participating in the services and activities of the department.
- Monitoring the department’s progress towards achieving identified outcomes.
The Disability Action Plan 2009–2012 has provided a good foundation from which the department can progress this agenda. I am pleased Deputy Secretary David Parker has taken on the role of the department’s Disability Sponsor, providing high-level advocacy and support for disability issues. A specialised Disability Coordinator position has also been established to provide a single point of contact for staff.
While the department has made real progress in this area, our expectation is that we will continue to create an environment of inclusion for people with disability in our business and in our dealings with stakeholders. This plan clearly articulates our objectives and provides mechanisms for measuring our progress and success.
