Fish River Station, a stunning 178,116 hectare property on the mighty Daly River, is breaking new ground in nature conservation in remote Australia.
In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Fish River Station was last year purchased for conservation in a ground-breaking collaboration by the Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC), the Nature Conservancy and the Pew Environment Group with assistance from the Australia Government’s Caring for our Country Initiative and support by Greening Australia. The ILC owns and manages the property and will eventually hand it back to traditional owners to manage its magnificent biodiversity for future generations.

150 kilometres south of Darwin, this stunning property has been purchased by the Indigenous Land Corporation, with funding from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country, the Nature Conservancy and the Pew Environment Group.
It will eventually be handed to its traditional owners to manage its spectacular environment as part of the National Reserve System, protecting forever its outstanding biodiversity.
This conservation jewel protects long stretches of the Daly, with fresh and saltwater crocodiles, billabongs fringed by savanna woodland and pockets of rainforest rising to magnificent ranges - providing habitat for an astounding array of wildlife.
Indigenous rangers are playing a key role in looking after this country - controlling weeds and feral animals, caring for threatened species and managing fire.
Fish River is a big win for conservation and it’s helping to close the gap on Indigenous disadvantage - providing jobs and reconnecting traditional owners with their land, ensuring they are genuine partners in its protection forever.
