Norfolk Island is serviced by regular flights from Australia (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Newcastle) and New Zealand (Auckland). Norfolk Island Tourism (the island's tourist bureau) offers information and advice about travel, accommodation and tours.

Norfolk Island is a self-governing external territory under the authority of the Commonwealth of Australia. It lies in the southwest Pacific Ocean about 1700 km east of Sydney and 1120 km north-west of Auckland, at Latitude 29°04"S and Longitude 167°56"E.

The Island is approximately 8 km long and 5 km wide and lies on the Norfolk Ridge, an elongated submarine rise which extends from New Zealand to New Caledonia. Norfolk and Phillip Islands have similar geology, both being almost completely volcanic in origin.

The sporadic volcanic activity which built the Islands extended over a period of roughly 700,000 years, beginning about 3 million years ago. The sea has since eroded Norfolk Island to an area of 3455 hectares, about one third of its original size, and formed a coastline of high cliffs.

Exploring the park

The Botanic Garden is located adjacent to the Norfolk Island National Park Headquarters at the intersection of Grassy Road and Mount Pitt Road. Parking and toilet facilities are available at the Garden.

The walking tracks in the Mount Pitt Section of the park can be entered after parking either on Mount Pitt Road, Selwyn Pine Road or J.E. Road.

The Captain Cook Monument and associated walking tracks can be accessed via Duncombe Bay Road.

Phillip Island can only be accessed by chartering a boat and through the use of a local guide. Charters are available in Burnt Pine and depart from Kingston jetty. Access to the island can be dangerous and local advice should be sought. Visitors intending to go to Phillip Island should have a good level of fitness, wear sturdy footwear, carry sufficient water for the day, wear a hat and adequate sun protection. Visitors who require constant medication should take an emergency supply with them in case they are isolated on the island by a sudden change of weather conditions which prevents them from getting off the Island.

Car hire

Whilst the island is relatively small, it is useful to have access to a vehicle to travel around the various points of interest. Car hire is relatively inexpensive and can be obtained from various outlets in Burnt Pine.
