Visiting a natural area has associated risks and it is advisable to take extra care to ensure a safe time. The sea cliffs and inland cliffs on Christmas Island can be very treacherous. You are strongly advised not to go near cliff edges as serious injury or death could result from falls. When near cliffs, exercise extreme caution.
Wave action around the coast and rock platforms is highly unpredictable and can be hazardous. When at the shoreline and on rock platforms always watch what the waves are doing and never turn your back to the sea. Exercise extreme caution when in these areas in any weather conditions.
During heavy seas, beaches can be subject to large waves, strong rips and undertows. No beach on the island is patrolled by lifesavers. Please use commonsense when swimming or wading at any beach on the island.
All plants and animals in the park are protected and should not be taken or interfered with.
Before exploring this national park it is important to take some precautions:
| Safety in the park | |
|---|---|
| It is easy to become lost in the rainforest so keep to tracks and roads. Some roads in the national park are designated 4WD only and many sections are steep and narrow and become slippery when wet. Drive carefully and slowly. Extra care should be taken when driving around during wet periods and during the red crab migration when crabs are out on roads and tracks. | |
| Walk with another person and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. | |
| Carry drinking water with you. | |
| When bushwalking wear sturdy shoes and sunscreen. | |
| Limestone pinnacles and cliffs are dangerous and should be avoided. Watch for unexpected waves and surges when close to the ocean. | |
| Obey all safety directions, notices and warning signs. | |
