Release of national environmental standards for One-Stop Shop reforms

Media release
28 March 2014

The Australian Government is making strong progress to deliver One-Stop Shop reforms to streamline environmental assessment and approval processes. Today the Government is releasing the accreditation standards for environmental approvals.

The release of the Standards for Accreditation of Environmental Approvals under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 is an important step in progressing the One-Stop Shop policy reform.

The standards set out the various matters for consideration in accrediting state and territory assessment and approval processes. This is to ensure high standards of environmental protection continue to be maintained.

Each state and territory may achieve the standards through their own regulatory systems and processes, but this must be consistent with the requirements of national environment law.

The One-Stop Shop policy will create a single environmental approval process that satisfies both state and Commonwealth requirements.

This will deliver a real boost to the nation's economy while ensuring that our environment continues to be protected.

To deliver on this important election commitment, the Federal Government is continuing to work with state and territory governments.

Last year the Australian Government signed Memoranda of Understanding with all states and territories, and is now working towards signing bilateral assessment agreements with all jurisdictions.

Bilateral assessment agreements have already been signed with Queensland and New South Wales. Draft agreements with South Australian and the ACT have been released for public comment.

The Government is committed to cutting red tape and the One-Stop Shop reforms are a key element of the Coalition's deregulation agenda. We can remove bureaucracy and still ensure the vital protection of the environment.
