GREEN CORPS SIGHTS SET ON ORANGE BELLIED PARROT

More than 300 young Australians will soon have the opportunity to help conserve the environment and national heritage sites, including the habitat of one of the country's most endangered parrots.

The projects are part of a new round of Green Corps opportunities announced today by Ms Trish Worth, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs and Mrs Sharman Stone, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and Heritage. The projects, offering a total of 340 places, will be advertised nationally this weekend.

The successful Green Corps program applicants, aged between 17 and 20, will focus on habitat protection, coastal rainforest, creeks and inland wetlands restoration and assisting one of Australia's most endangered species in 34 new projects scheduled to commence throughout Australia in June 1999.

The new Green Corps projects will also focus on identifying and protecting important indigenous cultural sites, stream and river care, native grassland protection and work with landcare groups to reverse land degradation and improve the condition of Australia's fertile lands.

A Victorian Green Corps team will restore and protect the habitat of the critically endangered Orange Bellied Parrot of which there are less than 200 mature adults known to survive in the wild. The Murray Bridge team in South Australia will also undertake an extensive threatened species recovery program to enhance the native habitat.

Green Corps volunteers not only gain valuable practical experience during the course of their project, they also receive accredited environmental training, providing nationally recognised skills transferable to other courses. Young Australians who join a Green Corps team will receive a training allowance of up to $269 per week.

Upon successful completion of their project, trainees may be eligible to receive a $500 payment towards the cost of further accredited education or training.

These new projects will build upon the considerable achievements of previous Green Corps teams over the past two and a half years.

The Federal Government's Green Corps managing agent, the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers, will advertise for project participants on 24 & 25 April. Additional information can be obtained from the toll-free Green Corps hotline, 1800 633 844.
