Senator the Hon Ian Macdonald
Parliamentary Secretary to the
Minister for the Environment
7 April 1997
The Federal Government has taken a major step in the battle against North Queensland's environmental problems with launch of its regional approach to the conservation and sustainable management of Australia's environment, the Natural Heritage Trust Guide for Regional Arrangements.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment, Ian Macdonald, says the Guide creates an integrated and regional framework for the operation of the $1.25 billion Natural Heritage Trust.
"The Guide for Regional Arrangements under the Natural Heritage Trust will enable community groups and other important stakeholders in North Queensland to participate in the development and implementation of regional strategies funded in part under the Natural Heritage Trust.
"It is a reflection of the Howard Government's deep commitment to getting environmental programs right at a regional level.
"The Guide will enable investment to be directed at high priority activities in North Queensland, and will encourage regional stakeholders to develop and commence self-sufficient and natural resource management systems.
"Important environmental programs such as the National Vegetation Initiative, Landcare, and Waterwatch Australia will therefore be driven by the direct input of Local Government, Industry and community groups.
"The development and implementation of regional strategies is the best way to ensure that the aims of the Natural Heritage Trust, those being the sustainable management of our land, water and biodiversity, and the sustainable use of agricultural resources, are met.
Copies of the Guide for Regional Arrangements under the Natural Heritage Trust are available from Senator Macdonald's office, or can be obtained by ringing Countrylink toll-free on 1800 026 222.
