Tumbarumba Shire Council will receive $2 million in Australian Government funding to secure future water supplies for the district.

Visiting Tumbarumba today, Parliamentary Secretary for Water Dr Mike Kelly announced that the Australian Government is meeting its commitment to provide up to $2 million from the Water Smart Australia program for the Tumbarumba Water Supply Upgrade.

“This project will increase the available water supply for the Tumbarumba township by installing a three million litre a day water treatment plant” Dr Kelly said.

“The water treatment processing facility will ensure water treated from the poorer quality source of Tumbarumba Creek, can be used to supplement the current source, Burra Creek. These measures will help to secure Tumbarumba’s water supply into the future.”

The project is expected to be completed by August 2011, and is the culmination of years of hard work on the part of Tumbarumba Shire Council to establish the best possible strategy for securing the Shire’s long-term water supply.

“I wish to congratulate all those involved in this process, and I am pleased that the project can now proceed” said Dr Kelly.

The Water Smart Australia program is part of the Australian Government’s Water for the Future initiative.

Water for the Future is built on four key priorities: taking action on climate change, using water wisely, securing water supplies and supporting healthy rivers.

Water for the Future relies on all levels of Government cooperating to secure sustainable, long term water supplies for the benefit of all Australians.
