The Hon Greg Hunt MP
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Federal Member for Flinders
9 June 2006
The Hon. Greg Hunt MP, Parliamentary Secretary with ministerial responsibility for Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park said today that staffing of the soon to be completed police post at Mutitjulu, a community at the base of Uluru, should be urgently addressed by the Northern Territory Government.
“The Federal Government has contributed $1.9 million towards the construction of the police post and housing for Aboriginal community police officers.
“However, the staffing arrangements of the station are the responsibility of the Northern Territory Government and it is up to the Chief Minister and her Police Minister to consult with the Northern Territory Police Association on the staffing requirements.
“The Federal Government only has the power to build the station and the accommodation – it is the Chief Minister who has the final say on the Northern Territory's police requirements.
“I have written to the Chief Minister urging her to place police at Mutitjulu before the station is completed in early August.
“I believe this should be a matter of priority for the Northern Territory Government, as is consulting with the Northern Territory Police Association.”
