Local governments awarded for thinking global, acting local

Local governments around Australia were today congratulated for reducing their energy use and saving the environment over one million tonnes of greenhouse gas abatement in a 12-month period.

Mr Greg Hunt, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, today awarded almost 90 local governments for their achievements in the Cities for Climate Protection™ (CCP) Australia programme and the Water Campaign™. Mr Hunt was representing the Minister, Senator Ian Campbell, at the Local Government Managers Australia National Congress in Canberra.

"Australian local governments are leading the world when it comes to thinking global, acting local to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Of the 675 local governments participating in the CCP programme internationally, Australia takes the lead with around 30 percent of participants being Australian local governments," Mr Hunt said.

"CCP Australia now has an incredible 203 local government participants representing almost 80 percent of the Australian population."

"Australian local governments should be proud of contributing to the success of CCP™ Australia on a global scale. It's great to see so many local governments improving not just the environment, but the quality of life for their own community."

"The success of CCP Australia is possible thanks to the support of the Australian Government."

"In 2004-05, 115 local governments participating in CCP Australia received a total of $780,000 in Australian Government grants to implement projects that provide energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

ICLEI's Water Campaign assists local governments in their efforts to manage water sustainably, and provides them the resources to improve local water quality, conservation and access.

"The Water Campaign already has 62 local government participants and looks set to be as successful as CCP."

CCP is an international programme delivered in Australia in partnership with the Australian Greenhouse Office, in the Department of the Environment and Heritage, and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiaitives (ICLEI). CCP encourages and supports local governments initiate greenhouse gas abatement action within their own operations and communities.
