Hunt launches Noosa Community Environment Trust

The Noosa Community is leading the way in encouraging community involvement in the protection of their local environment according to Hon. Greg Hunt, MP Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Environment and Heritage.

Mr Hunt was in Noosa to officially launch the Noosa Community Environment Trust which aims to encourage individuals, community groups and businesses to donate or bequeath funds or land for the long-term protection and benefit of the region’s environmental assets.

“Noosa has some spectacular natural assets and I am delighted to launch the Noosa Community Trust to help the unique local environment be preserved for future generations.”

“The establishment of the Noosa Community Environment Trust is a leading edge example of what active and committed involvement of local communities in Australia can achieve for the protection and conservation of our precious environmental assets,” Mr Hunt said.

The Trust has been established by the Noosa Community Environment Board in close collaboration with Noosa Council.

Mr Hunt said he hoped other councils around Australia followed the lead of Noosa Shire Council in establishing the project.

“I congratulate the Noosa Shire Council for their long term commitment to making the Noosa Community Environment Trust a reality,” Mr Hunt said.

Management of the Trust and its investments in the environment is undertaken by representatives of the local community with support from the Council.

The Australian Government has assisted the Trust by giving it tax deductible status for donations from the public.

Trust guidelines provide for investments that will benefit the environment in the Noosa region. Suitable environment projects and services are likely to target acquisition of land, forests, fauna and flora, rivers and lakes, coastlines, energy and the atmosphere.
