Claims of Bureau cuts are untrue

Dr Sharman Stone, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and Heritage has today denied the claims of a group calling themselves the Friends of the Bureau who say she ordered a cessation of recruitment at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

"This is complete nonsense. There is absolutely no truth to this claim," Dr Stone said.

Dr Stone said the range of Bureau services to rural and regional Australia were also not in jeopardy, as claimed by the group.

"These suggestions are false and based on wrong assumptions," Dr Stone said.

"The Australian Government wholeheartedly supports the Bureau of Meteorology having committed $62 million in last year's Budget to upgrade radar systems throughout Australia, the majority of which are in rural and regional Australia."
