Last shout for Rural and Regional Pubs Program

Applications for the $5m Rural and Regional Historic Hotels Program close on August 3rd and Dr Sharman Stone, Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment and Heritage, has reminded hoteliers that time in running out to apply for funding to maintain, restore and repair our Aussie 'icons'.

"Old pubs or hotels continue to be a focus of community life in small country towns", Sharman Stone said.

"The Rural and Regional Hotels Program is designed to give a much needed boost to historic hotels that are more than 50 years old or have local historical significance".

"August 3rd is the last day for applications to be submitted, so I'm encouraging the hundreds of eligible rural and regional hotels across the country to put together their proposals ASAP".

As a guide, grants of between $10,000 and $150,000 are encouraged.

A 50% cash or in-kind exchange is expected in a matching contribution. A condition of each grant is that the hotel does not have gaming machines and can be completed within 12 to 18 months.

"The program will fund restoration and preservation works to the historic features or attributes of the hotel where the work will bring tourism and other benefits to the local community", Sharman Stone said.

"Many hotels in small towns, especially those without pokies, find it hard to fund restoration works. Their significance to the local community is being recognised through this new Federal Government program".
