Minister for Science and Research
Minister Assisting on Tourism
New Ministerial responsibilities
25 March 2013
I am honoured to be appointed as the Minister for Science and Research and Minister Assisting on Tourism.
I thank the Prime Minister for the opportunity to help strengthen Australia’s science, research and tourism sectors.
Having served as the Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water for the past two and half years, I have worked very closely with some of Australia’s leading science and research agencies.
As I take on these new roles, I’d like to recognise the hard work of all the staff at the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, the Bureau of Meteorology, the National Water Commission and the Australian Antarctic Division, for their commitment to world-leading scientific knowledge and its application to initiatives that are helping to ensure a sustainable future for all Australians. I’d also like to thank the staff at the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust for their work protecting and improving public access to former defence and Commonwealth sites around Sydney Harbour.
The Australian tourism sector is a billion dollar industry that supports hundreds of thousands of jobs and is vital to our economy. I look forward to working with all stakeholders across the industry to make sure Australia continues to be one of the best tourist destinations in the world.
I would also like to congratulate Amanda Rishworth on her appointment as Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water. Amanda has been a passionate and knowledgeable advocate for sustainability outcomes for many years, with a particular interest in water, and I wish her well in this new role.
