Free TV and computer recycling events this weekend

Joint media release
21 February 2013

Australians will have more options for recycling their unwanted electronic waste this weekend, with a number of special recycling events to be held across the country.

Today Senator Don Farrell, Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water, and Member for Hindmarsh Steve Georganas MP visited a drop-off point in North Plympton, South Australia, which will be one of several sites hosting a free recycling event this weekend.

The recycling events will be provided by the Australia and New Zealand Recycling Platform (ANZRP), which has been approved by the Australian Government to deliver services under the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme.

"It's great to see that Australians are now getting so many more opportunities to recycle their unwanted televisions and computers," Senator Farrell said.

"Twenty recycling events will be held this weekend nationally, including here at the North Plympton site, with free recycling points available in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.

"These recycling events are in addition to around 100 ongoing recycling drop-off points already provided by the television and computer industry under the Australian Government's landmark product stewardship legislation.

"I congratulate ANZRP on this take-back event initiative and encourage anyone with unwanted equipment to take it to a recycling drop-off point, such as this site, for safe recycling. Televisions, computers and computer products such as laptops, tablets, printers and scanners can be dropped off, saving them from landfill.

"These events will help the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme boost the national recycling rate for these products to around 30 per cent this financial year. This is nearly double the total weight of television and computers recycled nationally before to the start of the scheme."

Several of the events this weekend will be held at sites that have also signed up with ANZRP to offer ongoing free drop-off points for televisions and computers. Some other sites will offer free recycling drop-offs this weekend only.

Steve Georganas said the scheme was a great free service for people in the western suburbs.

"We all know it can be a real hassle to get rid of an old computer or TV so having a place to take it to where you can safely dispose of it is great" he said.

"This will help reduce the amount of dumping on footpaths and help our environment too".

The North Plympton site has been accepting material under the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme since 3 September 2012 and to date has accepted about 168 tonnes of television and computer waste.

The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme is funded and implemented by the television and computer industry and regulated by the Australia Government under the Product Stewardship Act 2011 and the Product Stewardship (Televisions and Computers) Regulations 2011.

Earlier this week Standards Australia announced a new Australian/New Zealand Standard for electronic waste, which complements the recycling scheme.

"The standard aligns with the government's goal of ensuring that e-waste is managed in a manner that protects human health and the environment," Senator Farrell said.

"Householders and businesses can drop off unwanted e-waste products confident that the valuable materials they contain will be recovered, and that any hazardous materials will not enter the environment.

"The standard also provides environmentally-effective guidelines for industry and will help ensure that, from 1 July 2014, at least 90 per cent of all materials in e-waste collected under the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme are recovered for use in new products."
