20 February 2012
The Australian Government has thanked Dr Greg Ayers for the major national and international contributions he has made as Director of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, following the announcement of his intention to resign due to ill health.
Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water, Senator Don Farrell, today thanked Dr Ayers for his leadership of the national weather, climate and water agency over the past three years.
“The extreme weather events we have seen around Australia over the past few years, from tropical cyclones and floods to devastating bushfires, have highlighted the extremely important role the Bureau plays in delivering timely and accurate information and a range of essential services,” he said.
“As an atmospheric scientist of international renown, Dr Ayers has ensured that the Bureau has not only risen to these challenges but has continued to improve its delivery of meteorological, climate and other scientific information.”
Before his appointment as Director of Meteorology in March 2009, Dr Ayers was Chief of CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research after serving as Chief of Atmospheric Research from 2002.
Dr Rob Vertessy, Deputy Director of the Bureau (Climate and Water), will continue to act as Director while the Australian Government seeks to fill the vacancy created by Dr Ayers’ resignation.
