Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water
National Water Storage snapshot now on-line
21 October 2010
Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water, Senator Don Farrell, today officially launched the Bureau of Meteorology's national Water Storage information website.
"The release of Australia's first national water storage website is part of the Gillard Government's $12.9 billion investment in Water for the Future - a 10-year plan to secure long-term water supply for all Australians," Senator Farrell said.
"For the first time we can see clearly where and how much water is available across our nation and compare how various states, cities and basins are faring.
"This new product is an important step in providing the Australian community with a consistent and comprehensive national picture of Australia's water resources."
The three-year project was delivered with cooperation and commitment from the states and territories that provided data from over 250 water storages around the country. The Bureau's website covers more than 90 per cent of the water volume in Australia's publicly-owned storages.
Senator Farrell said that the national Water Storage information is the first of many new water information products that the Bureau will deliver using the new Australian Water Resources Information System.
"This is the first step in a long-term strategy to improve our understanding of Australia's water availability, condition and use.
"Having the ability to access national water information at a single site, will lead to enhanced community understanding and better-informed management of one of our most precious resources."
