Leader of the Government in the Senate
Minister for the Environment and Heritage
10 August 1999
The appointment Mr Geoff Bailey as the first Executive Director of the Interim Sydney Harbour Federation Trust was announced today by Federal Environment and Heritage Minister, Robert Hill and Kevin McCann, Chairman of the Interim Trust.
"Mr Bailey is a senior manager with extensive experience in overseeing the conservation of some of Australia's most significant heritage areas," Senator Hill said.
'The Interim Sydney Harbour Federation Trust has been established to manage the rehabilitation of several Defence sites around Sydney Harbour as they become surplus to Defence needs.
"Mr Bailey will manage the day to day activities of the Interim Trust and begin the important work of consulting with the public about possible future uses of the sites."
"He has an excellent understanding of the issues and sensitivities in work of this type, having worked for the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority for many years," Mr McCann said
'This included managing a prize-winning conservation program in The Rocks, one of Australia's best-known heritage areas.
"Prior to working for the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority, Mr Bailey worked for several years in the then NSW Department of Planning in areas such as environmental assessment and heritage. He is also currently a Board member of the NSW National Trust.
"His strong background in conserving heritage properties and environmental values will be invaluable in his work with the Interim Trust," Mr McCann said.
The establishment of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is part of the Commonwealth Government's 1998 election commitment to conserve the Defence sites, protect their environmental and heritage values and maximise public access to them.
