SEWING THE SEEDS FOR BETTER NATIVE BUSH COVER

(71/98)

The Howard Government has awarded a multi-million dollar contact to provide support services for revegetation efforts across Australia.

Internationally-recognised organisation Greening Australia has won the key three year contact worth up to $21 million dollars.

In South Australia, Greening Australia will share the workload with Trees for Life and the Nature Conservation Society of South Australia in a contract worth almost $3 million over three years.

The national contract will fund 120 positions across Australia, providing advice and support to thousands of community-based revegetation projects.

Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill says the expertise provided by Greening Australia is vital to the success of Bushcare - the largest program of the $1.25 billion Natural Heritage Trust.

Senator Hill says more than $360 million will be provided through Bushcare to protect and restore Australia' native vegetation cover.

"We have provided the financial base for this massive revegetation effort. We have enlisted the support of community groups across Australia to provide the workforce.

"Greening Australia will provide these groups with the technical expertise required to ensure their efforts deliver the maximum benefit to the environment."

Senator Hill says the South Australian consortium will deliver high quality service, support and advice to community groups across the State.

"The involvement of Trees for Life and the Nature Conservation Society really underlines the community focus of this national effort.

"More than $2 million worth of Bushcare projects went to South Australian community groups in the first round of funding. The national pool of funds for Bushcare projects will double for the second round of projects to be announced in the coming months.

"The involvement of Greening Australia, Trees for Life, and the Nature Conservation Society will give the community even greater confidence that their efforts will deliver lasting benefits to the environment."

Under the Bushcare Support Contract, Greening Australia will:

In Tasmania, the Tasmanian Conservation Trust will assist Greening Australia in the delivery of the education and awareness-raising elements of Bushcare Support.
