Senator the Hon Robert Hill
Leader of the Government in the Senate
Minister for the Environment
6 March 1997
The Commonwealth has signed a contract with the independent auditor for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed second major airport for Sydney.
The contract provides for SMEC Australia to report directly to Senator Hill and for its reports to be tabled in Parliament.
SMEC Australia has been actively working on the potential environmental and community issues associated with the proposal to locate a second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek or Holsworthy since the announcement of its appointment in November last year.
The appointment of the independent auditor delivered on an election commitment of the Government.
The auditor will provide independent reassurance to the community that the process of the environmental assessment is technically sound.
