Natural Heritage Trust

Media Release
Joint Statement by Minister for the Environment, Robert Hill, and
Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, John Anderson

Extension for NT Community Groups

30 March 1997

Community groups in the Northern Territory now have until Friday 18 April to apply to be among the first participants in the Natural Heritage Trust.

Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill and Primary Industries Minister John Anderson have confirmed a decision by the Northern Territory Government to extend the deadline for community grant applications.

The closing date for applications from Aboriginal communities and Landcare, environment and other groups in the Territory has been extended by three weeks to give groups more time to plan and submit their proposals.

Senator Hill says the Howard Government's Natural Heritage Trust will provide an additional $1.25 billion over five years for activities which directly benefit the environment and promote the sustainable use of agricultural resources.

"Through the Trust, the Howard Government can now provide increased financial backing to local communities in the Territory to support their hard work and commitment to protecting, repairing and better managing their environment," he said.

Mr Anderson encouraged groups to take advantage of the streamlined application process.

"Under the Trust's community grants program, groups are able to submit project proposals, in one application, which address a range of environmental and natural resource issues in an integrated way," he said.

Applications for community grants from the Natural Heritage Trust need to be lodged with the NT Department of Lands, Planning and the Environment in Darwin.

Copies of the Guide to Community Group Applications 1997-98 are available from the department in Darwin and Federal electorate offices. A toll free number for Natural Heritage Trust enquiries is provided through Countrylink on 1800 026 222.
