COMMONWEALTH GREENHOUSE OFFICE TO BE ESTABLISHED

20 November 1997

A new Commonwealth Greenhouse Office is to be established in the Department of the Environment to galvanise the drive to improve Australia's greenhouse performance.

Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill says the Office will have the important job of driving forward the Government's progressive agenda on greenhouse.

"It will take over responsibility for the coordination of domestic climate change policy and delivery of the Commonwealth's greenhouse response programmes.

"That will include managing the delivery of major new programmes and existing programmes including: the Greenhouse Challenge; Cities for Climate Protection; Bush for Greenhouse; energy codes and standards and emissions standards programmes; vehicle fuel efficiency and vehicle labelling; the Government's renewable energy programmes; National Greenhouse Gas Inventory; and the National Carbon Accounting System.

The Office will be the central point of contact for State and Territory Governments, industry and other stakeholders, and will play the lead negotiating role with stakeholders in implementing the package of measures and finalising the National Greenhouse Strategy.

The Office will report to the Minister for the Environment through a Board of Management comprising senior officials from relevant portfolios.

Through its lead greenhouse role in the Commonwealth and its integrated approach to greenhouse, the Office will facilitate the realisation of both economic and environmental benefits for Australia from the opportunities arising from response action. Australia's competitive strength in renewable energy technology, and its world-leading approach to carbon and sink accounting, are key examples.

Creation of the Office will achieve a cohesive, coordinated and effective national approach to greenhouse response.
