Senator the Hon Jim Short

18 March 1997

The Leader of the Government in the Senate, Senator Robert Hill, has paid tribute to former Assistant Treasurer, Senator the Hon Jim Short.

Senator Short will resign from the Senate to take up a senior posting with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London.

Senator Short entered the Senate in 1984, having previously served in the House of Representatives from 1975 to 1980.

Senator Hill says Senator Short had established and maintained a reputation for hard work, integrity and policy development over a long and impressive parliamentary career.

"It has been a privilege to work with Senator Short. He has been an outstanding representative for the people of Victoria and a loyal and committed member of the Liberal Party.

"I particularly valued Senator Short's loyalty, advice and wisdom during the time he served as my Deputy from 1992-93.

"Senator Short's strength in the area of economic policy has been invaluable to the Coalition both in Opposition and in Government, and will no doubt serve him well in his new role.

"Senator Short has also made an enormous contribution toward a more tolerant and inclusive Australia society through his tireless efforts in the areas of immigration and multicultural and ethnic affairs. l am sure Australia's ethnic communities would join with me in acknowledging and thanking him for his work in these areas.

"The long and impressive list of Senate Committees on which Senator Short has served is another testament to his commitment to serve the Australian people.

"Senator Short has been a valued colleague and a key member of the Coalition Senate team.

"On behalf of all Coalition Senators, l thank Senator Short for his work in the Senate. I also extend to Senator Short and his wife Jan our best wishes for success in their new challenge."
