Dugong Protection Areas

10 July 1997
(80/97)

Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill says he has no basis to believe the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has misled the Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Council.

"I retain confidence in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and would be amazed if the allegations against the authority by the Queensland Primary Industries Minister could be substantiated.

"I know of no secret report and have asked the Queensland Primary Industries Minister for a copy of the report to which he is referring.

"There is an open and transparent process under way to resolve outstanding issues regarding the dugong protection areas, including boundaries and compensation.

"The Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Council is due to meet on 14 August to finalise the boundaries of the dugong protection areas and the compensation regime."
