Senator the Hon Robert Hill
Leader of the Government in the Senate
Minister for the Environment
26 September 1996
Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill says the development of the coal gasification process could help Australia and other APEC nations reduce the environmental impacts of energy use and supply.
Senator Hill has officially opened the HRL Coal Gasification Development Facility at Morwell in Victoria.
Senator Hill says the HRL project addresses the greenhouse emissions problem faced by the brown coal industry.
"This project could result in the development of a potentially practical and effective working solution.
"Integrated drying coal gasification technology is an advanced 'cleaner coal' technology.
"If able to be retrofitted to existing brown coal base load power stations, it would provide a significant opportunity to reduce our current emissions.
"Such technologies have an important place alongside renewable energy technologies in reducing environmental impacts."
Senator Hill says Australia remains committed to playing a significant role in the global efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions.
"The HRL project is showing that the coal industry is prepared to take on its share of the responsibility for reducing greenhouse emissions.
"The coal gasification technology being launched today clearly provides an important step forward in addressing the environment issues associated with coal fired electricity generation.
"By increasing the efficiency of the combustion process, this technology can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions."
Senator Hill says HRL Coal Gasification Development Facility is further confirmation that businesses and industries are prepared to work with the Government to achieve best practice in implementing greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
