Media Release
Senator the Hon Robert Hill
Leader of the Government in the Senate
Minister for the Environment

Environmental Auditor

22 October 1996
(136/96)

Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill has announced the Government will appoint an independent environmental auditor for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process for the proposed second major airport for Sydney.

The Environment Department has written to seven leading environment consultancy firms asking for expressions of interest.

The move fulfils the commitment of the Government to appoint an environmental auditor, consistent with the recommendations of the Senate Select Committee on Aircraft Noise in Sydney.

Senator Hill says it is important to understand the role the auditor is expected to play.

"The environmental auditor will review documentation relied on in preparing the EIS and report on the technical adequacy of the EIS.

"The audit function will require some degree of public interaction, so the auditor will communicate with the public where appropriate.

"The auditor will provide to the Government an audit report on the Draft EIS as soon as possible after it is released.

"The audit report will be released to the public so that it can be relied upon in preparing public submissions on the Draft EIS.

"The auditor will also report on the adequacy of the final EIS, taking into account public submissions.'

Senator Hill says it is hoped that an appointment can be made within 2 to 3 weeks.
