Kintyre to Require Full EIS

20 September 1996
(114/96)

Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill has announced that the application by Canning Resources Pty Limited to mine uranium at Kintyre in Western Australia is to be subject to a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) under Commonwealth legislation.

Senator Hill said the mine proposal had been referred to him by Resources and Energy Minister, Senator Warwick Parer, under the EPIP Act.

"There will be a high level of public participation in the EIS ensuring that the process is both open and transparent. "

"As with other proposals for uranium mines, Kintyre will be assessed against the highest environmental standards".

The Kintyre uranium deposit is located on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert in the Rudall River region of Western Australia - 1200 km NNE of Perth. Canning Resources Pty Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of CRA Limited.
