Appointments to the National Library of Australia Council

Minister for the Arts, Peter Garrett, congratulated the Chief Justice of New South Wales, the Honourable James Spigelman AC, on his appointment as Chair and member of the Council of the National Library of Australia and Ms Jane Hemstritch on her appointment as a member of the Council.

"Chief Justice Spigelman is one of Australia's most eminent jurists with a strong interest in Australian arts and culture. He has served as Chairman of the Film Finance Corporation, as a member of the Council of the National Gallery of Australia and as a Councillor of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.

"In 2000 Chief Justice Spigelman was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia, for services to law and to the community. The appointment is for a term of three years.

"As a member of the Council of the National Library, Ms Hemstritch will bring her business insight and private sector experience to this position. Ms Hemstritch is currently a non-executive Director of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Tabcorp Holdings Ltd, Santos Ltd and the Global Foundation.

"Her expertise as a respected business person in the areas of financial governance and communications will complement the work of the Council. The appointment is for a term of three years.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank Sir James Gobbo AC CVO QC who served for nine years as Chair of the Council of the National Library.

"Sir James' energy, intellect, legal expertise and exemplary leadership characterised all aspects of his tenure. I also want to pay tribute to his extensive knowledge and passion for multicultural issues which are evident in the Library's approach to documenting Australia's cultural diversity."

The National Library of Australia is one of Australia's major national cultural institutions. It makes a significant contribution to the continuing vitality of Australia's cultural heritage by maintaining and developing a substantial national collection of library material.
