Senator the Hon. Ian Campbell
27 February 2006
Nominations are now open for Australia’s most prestigious environmentalist award – the Prime Minister’s Award for Environmentalist of the Year, which rewards achievements in environmental protection and education.
The Australian Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell, said the Prime Minister’s Award had been expanded to recognise the outstanding contribution members of our community make to protect Australia’s wealth of environmental and heritage places.
“Expanding the categories for the Prime Minister’s Award to include Australia’s heritage places, pays tribute to the individuals and groups all around Australia who work hard each year to protect and conserve our nation’s special places,” Senator Campbell said.
“Australia’s heritage is rich and diverse, encompassing natural landscapes, Indigenous places, coastal sites, and historic buildings. These places need the support and care of the community to survive.
“Projects eligible for the Prime Minister’s Award will be those that have played an important role in conserving and protecting a significant place, and that also provided education and raised awareness of the issues of protection and conservation of Australia’s significant heritage and environmental places.”
The Award is open to any Australian individual, organisation or group that has been involved in:
The Banksia Environmental Foundation was created in 1989 to support and recognise members of the community for their positive contribution to the environment. The Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year award has been sponsored by the Department for the Environment and Heritage since 2001.
“The Australian Government is proud to sponsor the Banksia Awards and will continue to support the community and industry in finding solutions to the challenges that face our natural and built environments and heritage places,” Senator Campbell said.
Nominations close on 10 May 2006.
