Australian Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Senator the Hon. Ian Campbell
23 June 2006
At the 13th annual Environment Protection and Heritage Council (EPHC) meeting in Sydney today, all Labor State Environment Ministers voted to have a debate about nuclear energy.
Led by Victorian Environment Minister John Thwaites, the Labor Ministers requested the item, with Commonwealth support, be placed on the agenda at the last minute.
This flies in the face of the position taken by Kim Beazley.
This reflects the reality that the states recognise that the full-blown debate on nuclear energy is valid.
Minister Thwaites specifically said that Victoria seeks to debate all forms of energy – including nuclear.
Minister Campbell said, “This is a welcome development and shows just how out of touch Kim Beazley is”.
