Sunrise first television show to achieve Australian Government Greenhouse Friendly™ status

Popular morning television programme Sunrise has today become Australia’s first ‘carbon neutral’ show under the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Friendly™ initiative.

The Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell, today congratulated Channel Seven Sunrise presenters Melissa Doyle and David Koch for their commitment to making the show more energy efficient and climate friendly.

“Sunrise, viewers can be confident the production and broadcasting of the show is helping to ‘cool the globe’,” Senator Campbell said.

“Sunrise has been subjected to an exhaustive six week greenhouse ‘audit’ to detect how many greenhouse gases are produced in the making and broadcasting of the show. “As part of the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Friendly™ certification, Sunrise will now monitor and report these emissions each year.

“The show will then balance ‘the good with the bad’ to become ‘carbon neutral’ by buying abatement through projects such as tree planting to offset its remaining emissions.”

Senator Campbell also launched Global Warming Cool It – a practical guide to help Australian households reduce their energy use and become more climate friendly.

Every Australian household emits around 14 tonnes of greenhouse gas each year. Simple things such as using public transport, taking shorter showers and washing clothes in cold water can all help in reducing greenhouse gases.

“Sunrise, like the Australian Government, has taken a strong stance in responding to the threat of climate change. Global Warming Cool It will help everyone to play their part,” Senator Campbell said.

“Greenhouse Friendly™ is an Australian Government initiative to help organisations help the environment and improver their bottom line.

“Obtaining Greenhouse Friendly™ certification is a positive change for businesses looking to focus on corporate sustainability issues.”

Sunrise joins the other Greenhouse Friendly™ certified products including AGL Green Balance™ electricity, BP Global Choice™ (incorporating a range of fuels), Origin Energy GreenEarth Gas, Dulux Aquanamel and EnvirO2 paints and Earth Friendly power from Synergy.
