Joint Media Release
Australian Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Senator the Hon. Ian Campbell
Australian Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation
Senator Eric Abetz
4 August 2006
The Australian Government will provide an extra $1.04 million over the next two years to assist in the eradication of foxes from Tasmania.
The funding is conditional upon the Tasmanian Government reinstating the $2.08 million over four year they recently cut from the Fox Free Taskforce budget, with at least $1.04 million of this be spent in 2006/07 and 2007/08.
As a result of this Howard Government initiative, there will be an extra $3.12 million available over the next four years to fight foxes in Tasmania.
"This announcement is great news for the fight against foxes in Tasmania", Senator Abetz said.
"It nearly triples the resources directed to the fight and means that more resources will be available particularly over the next two years, whilst there is still a chance to eradicate foxes.
"So important is this issue that the Howard Government is willing to contribute extra funds despite the State Government's reluctance to do so.
"All the experts agree see that extra resources are urgently required to fight foxes in this state.
"I urge the Tasmanian Government to abandon their foolish argument that extra funding won't help the problem, and agree immediately to reinstate their funding so that maximum resources can be directed to the fight to eradicate foxes."
